Why I Hate the New AT&T Commercials
By Elven Hottie
Recently, AT&T released several commercials "starring" Luke Wilson as their rally leader in the anti-Verizon movement. Maybe it is because I lived in a town where AT&T didn't work very well, or perhaps it is because I have tried dealing with their "customer service?" representatives more than once (all this left me with was a headache and more distrust for them) but I REALLY hate those commercials.
Interestingly enough, a strange anomaly has occurred: though I can't stand watching them, I will spend the next 30 minutes to an hour writing about them. The whole thing just makes me have an image in my head of Verizon and AT&T standing side by side with their pants down comparing sizes - and frankly, in my opinion - there is a reason why Verizon is the largest network...
Here I go!
OK! So first off, Lukey here tells us to compare networks. This is all fine and dandy, but he doesn't lay out ALL the cards on the table - and he is only dealing with clubs. No one cares about clubs!!
Then, the clubs he lays out are not necessarily because of AT&T. Yes, their 3G network IS faster than Verizon in places like New York City, Seattle or L.A. (where AT&T 3G coverage ACTUALLY exists), but go to anywhere in Wyoming and you are SUNK! At least Verizon HAS coverage there! As far as the fastest network - Sprint may have to claim that role!
Next, AT&T allows you to surf the web and talk on the phone at the same time... I would be severely irritated if I were talking to someone on the phone and they were (at the same time they were talking to me) using that phone to check their email or the price of tea in China.
AT&T has the most popular smart phones... CORRECTION - AT&T has the most popular smart phone (singular), not phones (plural). It is true that the iPhone is one of the best and most popular phones ever made and it is lucky for AT&T that Verizon rejected Apple when they first asked them to sell the iPhone. Why didn't Verizon take it? They wanted to be able to offer complete customer service to their customers and not have to send their customers to another company should they have problems with their phones.
Access to over 100,000 apps... tell me, are those apps created through AT&T or Apple?
Name that starts with the letter "V" or name that has a weird "&" in it? I don't see why it matters...
BRING ON THE NEXT!
Ahhhhhh... the famous 2-part commercial, where Lukey (has he gained weight???) starts off by telling us that Verizon has made a big deal about maps - then goes on to say that they have coverage almost anywhere... and shows a different map.
WHAT HE DOESN'T EXPLAIN is that Verizon showed the 3G map and he is showing the VOICE map... and the funny thing is - it STILL isn't as good as Verizon's map!
Then, he goes on to tell you all the names of the cities that AT&T covers (this is what made me hate these commercials the most)... listen to part 2 at 11 seconds Lukey says "Bozeman, MT." Remember how I told you earlier in this article that I lived in a town where AT&T didn't work well? Well, ladies and gents, it was... Bozeman, MT.
Not only did AT&T phones have problems functioning in that town, the company would KICK PEOPLE OFF of their network when they moved there!!! I met a family who had just bought two iPhones at full retail two months before moving and were not able to get a refund for a phone they were no longer able to use because their phone company kicked them off... does this sound like great service in (press play at second 11 again)... Bozeman, MT??? I want to scream "FALSE ADVERTISING" from the rooftops!
This one has to be my favorite... not only does it not let you watch the full download to really see if AT&T is faster or if it was just started 10 seconds earlier, but whoever was hired to do the graphics for this commercial should be fired for their lousy work.
On the bright side... after watching all those other commercials, there is nothing funnier to me than watching a headless Luke Wilson.
OK, I should probably take a break and take a brisk walk to calm myself down... truth is, I used to respect Luke Wilson as an actor and I think it is sad that he has been so demoted that he has to do these stupid commercials.
And as for AT&T, they need to grow up... Verizon showed up in the playground and says their little sales spiel demonstrating maps and AT&T can't think of anything else to say except "Verizon, you are a poopy-head."

Hey mpurcell10, thank you for your comment! And for reading!
Both AT&T and Verizon suck. US West went out of the area here, and Verizon was going to charge us $800 or something for security deposits. We switched to T-mobile, with 2 free Blackberries and very modest fees. Plus NO stupid security deposit BS.
And poor Luke. He used to be cute...one of my favorites. He's just gettin' fat.
AG! I hate crappy cell phone service! I am sorry that happened to you... and I feel bad for Luke as well - he was a cutie!!
Thank you so much for this great analytic piece! I'm tired of companies like at&t promising what they don't have - I had the same problem with tmobile's claim of being the fastest 4g network even though it took me 4 10 minutes to access the internet!

Great hub! I've had problems with them myself. They don't work here either.
